From farm to racecourse

Ascot began on the Hardey family’s Grove Farm beside the Swan River, initially taking the name Perth Racecourse. Access shaped its development: a railway branch from Bayswater reached the river in 1885, following the line of today’s Garratt Road. It helped turn a riverside racing ground into a destination for Perth’s growing population, well before the city acquired its modern suburban outline.

A state racing landmark

Ascot became Western Australia’s racing headquarters under legislation passed in 1917. The Western Australian Turf Club then oversaw race dates, registrations and the licensing of trainers and jockeys across the state. The venue’s buildings developed alongside that role: the old grandstand was enlarged for the club’s centenary, while a new stand opened in 1969.
