A changing grandstand
Caulfield’s Rupert Clarke Grandstand replaced the main stand that had served spectators since the 1920s. Work began in 1989 and was carried out in two phases, producing a three-level building with a grass frontage. This was a major change to the racegoer’s view of Caulfield: the old sporting ground gained a new public face while retaining its established racing circuit and traditions.
Wartime service
During the Second World War, Caulfield temporarily became an Army facility. Military occupation began in March 1940, with the grounds used as barracks, a recruiting depot and a centre for examining recruits before service. Racing meetings moved to Flemington during the interruption. The racecourse was handed back to the club in February 1944, and horses returned to competitive action there that August.
