A lost straight course
Doomben once possessed a straight six-furlong course, a layout that would have offered a very different sprinting experience from a race around a bend. The straight was lost to the neighbouring airfield during the Second World War. That change is a useful reminder that the familiar circuit is only one chapter in the venue’s history: Brisbane’s wartime needs left a permanent mark on its racing landscape.
A shared training centre
Doomben and nearby Eagle Farm form a connected training community within the Brisbane Racing Club. Trainers have access to facilities at both venues, combining different exercise surfaces with specialist equipment such as an equine swimming pool. Stabling and walking machines are part of this wider operation. A raceday is the public-facing part of a much larger routine of preparing and caring for horses throughout the week.
