Feehan’s farm

William Samuel Cox established the racecourse on a farm previously owned by John F. Feehan. The first meeting opened with an unusual result: Eveline and Pyrette dead-heated in the Maiden Plate. Racing also became a family undertaking. After Cox’s death, his son Archie served as club secretary and steward, while other relatives remained closely involved in the sport.

Racing after dark

Night racing became one of The Valley’s defining experiences, with the crowd close to the action around its compact circuit. Redevelopment began after the 2025 Cox Plate Carnival to replace ageing track, lighting and grandstand facilities. The club’s plans include a new event centre, horse-stall precinct and wider community spaces.
