Built around the railway

Rosehill’s early development was closely tied to railway access. Its founder, John Bennett, arranged a private branch from the Clyde line, with a platform beside the racecourse. The line opened in 1888 and also served surrounding development and agricultural traffic. It later passed into public ownership. The station was part of the original idea of making a substantial sporting destination accessible to people travelling from beyond the immediate neighbourhood.

Two clubs become one

The racecourse occupies land once belonging to the Elizabeth Farm estate. When that estate was subdivided, an area was reserved for recreation rather than industrial development, creating the setting for Rosehill. Its management later passed to the Sydney Turf Club, which joined with the Australian Jockey Club in 2011 to form the Australian Turf Club. The venue’s story links estate subdivision, suburban growth and the organisation of Sydney racing.
