From common to park

Haydock’s origins connect with meetings held at Newton-le-Willows on Golborne Heath. Initially supported by the hunting community, those gatherings attracted a broader audience as industry developed nearby. The later move to Haydock Park created a permanent setting within the estate. The Old Newton Cup preserves a link with the earlier course.

The Legh family estate

Haydock’s woodland and tree-lined approaches recall its earlier life as part of the Legh family estate. The family took the title of Newton when elevated to the peerage, preserving its local connection in another form. Although the racecourse lies between major industrial cities, the parkland setting gives it a different atmosphere.
