Designed for racegoers

Sandown was developed with the spectator experience in mind, offering a more organised environment for a day at the races. Its history emphasises the provision of facilities and a setting intended to make attendance comfortable and appealing. That ambition helped shape the idea of a modern racecourse as a complete destination. The relationship between grandstands, public areas and views of the racing is therefore an important part of Sandown’s original identity.

Champions across codes

Sandown’s calendar brings together Flat racing and National Hunt competition, giving the same venue two distinct sporting rhythms. During one part of the year the focus is on speed across the turf; during another, fences and hurdles shape the challenge. That variety adds depth to the course’s history and its audience. The Group 1 races shown here represent only the Flat-racing chapter of a venue with a much broader sporting life.
