The subscribers’ stand
York’s first permanent grandstand was designed by John Carr and financed by 250 subscribers, each contributing five guineas. Subscribers and their successors received the right to use the stand during the lease, making the building a collective investment in the experience of watching racing. Part of Carr’s architecture survives within the later development.
The Knavesmire landscape
The Knavesmire was common land with a stream running through it, requiring substantial drainage and levelling before it could serve as a racecourse. The layout changed over time, moving between a complete circuit and an open, hooked configuration. The later addition of the north bend restored a full round course.
