Olympic figure-skating champion and film star Sonja Henie participated in Gulfstream’s opening ceremony, giving the new racing venture an immediate connection with popular entertainment. The appearance reflected an ambition to make the course a social attraction as well as a sporting venue. Its early years were not financially straightforward, however.
James Donn Sr., the owner of Exotic Gardens, was one of the creditors left unpaid after Gulfstream’s first venture failed. He took control and brought racing back, turning a business setback into the start of a new chapter for the course. His background as a florist makes the story particularly unusual.
