The Vessels ranch
Los Alamitos began with informal match races on the Vessels family’s ranch. Frank Vessels Sr. had built a construction business before pursuing his ambition to create a racecourse on the property. Heavy rain made the first pari-mutuel meeting difficult, but the family invested in improvements and returned with a longer programme.
A Quarter Horse star
Quarter Horse racing is central to Los Alamitos’ history. Go Man Go became an early star there, drawing crowds and wider attention to a form of racing built around explosive short-distance speed. Later champions continued that tradition. The thoroughbred Group 1 races in this archive sit alongside this much broader identity.
