Racing for the shore
Monmouth Park was conceived partly as a way to encourage summer trade along the New Jersey shore. Businessmen and local political figures backed a racing destination that would bring visitors into the seaside communities. Its first meeting quickly attracted wider attention, but financial difficulties also shaped the early years.
More than one Monmouth
Several different developments have carried the Monmouth Park name. An expanded course followed the first venue, but restrictions on wagering eventually forced racing to stop for decades. The modern chapter began with the reopening in 1946 after efforts to restore legal pari-mutuel betting.
