Across the road
Saratoga’s earliest thoroughbred racing took place across the road from the later racecourse, so the history of the meeting and the development of the familiar site are not quite the same thing. The first contests established the appetite for racing in the spa town before the venue expanded. That distinction helps make sense of historical dates and images, connecting the modern course with the smaller beginnings of its sporting tradition.
The 1863 Club
The 1863 Club uses its rooms to recall people and horses from Saratoga’s history. Suites honour celebrated runners, while other spaces recognise figures such as John Morrissey, Leonard Jerome and William Travers. A lounge commemorates Captain Moore, winner of the first race in the town’s early meeting. The building’s names turn modern hospitality facilities into a series of references to the personalities behind the wider Saratoga story.
