Chocolate Gelato is the third foal and first winner out of Special Treat (Candy Ride), herself a winner and a half-sister to two other winners.

The second dam Snooze (Forestry) did not win.

The third dam Daydreaming (A.P. Indy) won seven races, among them the Grade 2 Top Flight Handicap, the Grade 3 Next Move Handicap and the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks, and was twice placed at Grade 1 level. She has produced six winners, headed by the sire Imagining (Giant's Causeway), who won nine races including the Grade 1 Man O'War Stakes, and two further black-type horses. Daydreaming is a full sister to two sires: Girolamo, winner of the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes, and Accelerator, winner of the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes.

This branch of the Phipps family also includes the Grade 1 winners Rhythm (Mr. Prospector), Girolamo (A.P. Indy) and Super Saver (Maria's Mon).

Special Treat is in foal to Silver State (Hard Spun).
