A royal distinction
Randwick’s royal title was granted by Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in February 1992, following years of approaches from the Australian Jockey Club. It recognises a relationship that developed over a much longer period than the title itself suggests. The word ‘Royal’ is therefore a specific distinction in the venue’s history, rather than simply part of a modern brand or an informal description of its importance.
The Sandy Course
The early Randwick racing ground was known as the Sandy Course. Match races and training took place there in the early 1830s, before Sydney racing acquired its later organisational structure. The Australian Jockey Club emerged as a permanent institution in 1842 after earlier meetings had helped establish support. This early name describes the ground’s history; it should not be taken to mean that today’s Group 1 races are run on sand.
