A change of heart
Doncaster’s relationship with racing was not always straightforward. In 1600, the town’s corporation tried to stop meetings because of the unruly crowds they attracted. By 1614, that attempt had been abandoned and a dedicated racecourse established instead. The change of approach helped racing become part of the town’s identity.
Sunday’s sporting first
Doncaster staged Britain’s first Sunday race meeting in 1992, attracting 23,000 spectators despite betting not being permitted on the occasion. The event marked a change in how a traditional sport fitted into people’s leisure time. The venue also inherited fixtures from elsewhere: the Lincoln Handicap moved here after its original course closed.
