A park inside the track
Penfold Park occupies the centre of Sha Tin Racecourse, creating a public green space within a major sporting venue. Managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, it opens on non-racedays, subject to the venue’s operating arrangements. The lawns and parkland offer a very different experience from the crowded grandstands. The infield is therefore part of local community life as well as the landscape seen during a race meeting.
Wildlife and horses
Penfold Park is also a habitat for wild egrets, bringing a wildlife dimension to Sha Tin’s racing landscape. During the Beijing Olympics it served as a training venue for equestrian horses, and Olympic exhibits were retained to commemorate that role. These two aspects give the centre of the course an identity beyond thoroughbred racing: a place associated with urban nature and with another branch of international equestrian sport.
