The Twin Spires

Churchill Downs’ Twin Spires were designed by young draftsman Joseph Dominic Baldez as part of the grandstand built in 1895. They became the most recognisable architectural feature of the course, even as later additions changed the surrounding skyline. Modern lighting and spectator facilities belong to different phases of its development. Permanent floodlighting introduced in 2010 later made night racing possible.

Inspired by Europe

Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. drew inspiration from visits to the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris when planning a major race in Louisville. The land came from his uncles John and Henry Churchill, whose name the venue adopted. This links a distinctly American sporting tradition with European racing and a local family property. The course’s origins were both international in ambition and closely rooted in Louisville’s own community.
