Vela Azul is out of Vela Blanca (Kurofune), a dual winner on dirt over 1800 metres at Hanshin and Fukushima. He is the sixth of her seven foals of racing age, one of her five winners and by far the best of them; the others are by Harbinger, Turtle Bowl, Novellist and World Ace.

Second dam Admire Sunday (Sunday Silence) was Listed-placed and produced five black-type horses, led by Aventura (Jungle Pocket), winner of the Gr.1 Shuka Sho and champion three-year-old filly in Japan, whose full sister Tall Poppy also won a Classic and was a champion juvenile. Fusaichi Ho O, also by Jungle Pocket, is a Listed winner.

Third dam Moon Indigo (El Gran Senor) had two foals, Admire Sunday the better of them. She is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Moonlight Dance (Alysheba) and a daughter of the French champion Madelia (Caro), who won the Gr.1 French 1000 Guineas, the Gr.1 French Oaks and the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary in 1977 without defeat. Madelia also produced Claude Monet, a Group 2 winner and sire, and the Classic-placed sire Marignan.

Vela Blanca has a yearling filly by World Ace; she was covered by Bago but has no foal this year.
