Colonel Liam is out of the unraced Amazement (Bernardini) and is the best of her two winners. Amazement is a half-sister to Red Raven (Smart Strike), a triple Listed winner in Japan who was twice placed at Group 3 level.

Second dam Wonder Again (Silver Hawk) was a multiple Grade 1 winner, taking the Grade 1 Garden City Handicap and the Grade 1 Diana Handicap. She is a full sister to two sires, the dual Listed winner Grass Wonder and the Group 3-placed Al Tharib.

Third dam Ameriflora (Danzig) never raced and is the grandam of the graded winners Hopeful Growth and Ten City. She is a full sister to Tribulation, winner of the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and dam of Bold Hawk, a Grade 3 winner placed in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby.

His sixth dam is Soaring (Swaps), a foundation mare for Darby Dan, herself a daughter of the French-bred Skylarking II (Mirza), foaled in 1947.

Amazement has a two-year-old colt by Arrogate and a yearling colt by Copper Bullet, and has been covered again by Liam's Map.
