Queen Anne’s vision
Queen Anne’s enthusiasm for racing began Ascot’s enduring royal association. Successive monarchs supported the course, while the summer meeting formally became a royal week in 1911. That relationship is still visible in the names and traditions surrounding the event. Race names such as Windsor Castle preserve those royal associations.
A modern royal landmark
Ascot’s modern redevelopment was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. The new racecourse surroundings accommodate a gathering whose traditions remain highly recognisable, including the arrival of the royal party in horse-drawn carriages during the June meeting. The contrast between contemporary facilities and established ceremony is part of the venue’s appeal.
